The sobriquet 'The Worlds Greatest Detective', once the property of Sherlock Holmes, is now routinely accorded to Gotham's Dark Knight, Batman: one of the very few facts not recorded in Roz Kaveney's erudite, entertaining and immensely accessible analysis of a fascinating genre. Kaveney, one of the most respected critics of crime fiction, has a similar enthusiasm for the muscular caped sleuths of the comics worlds, and grants the field the seriousness that is its due, with the achievement of such significant creators as Jack Kirby, Julius Schwartz and Alan Moore intelligently treated. There's a wealth of ideas here – though nary an illustration. But who needs them with text as evocative as this?
