My protagonist Lori Anderson is a woman operating in a man’s world. She’s used to the male dominated environment of bounty hunting and, because of the experiences she’s had of always having to prove her worth in the profession, she feels she has to be better than the men in order to be accepted as an equal.
I guess there’s a bit of me in that aspect of her. As someone who started work in the nineties, my first few work experiences were in companies where men outnumbered women 10:1. Sexist comments were thought of as the norm, and female colleagues were expected to do the office washing up and fetch the team lunch. The world of work has moved on somewhat since then (although there is still a way to go) but those experiences have stayed with me and motivated me to create a character who refuses to be seen as anything less than equal.
Although Lori is an action character, she’s not a super hero. She’s a modern woman – a working single mom trying to balance her work and her home life – it’s just that in her kind of job she carries a Taser. She’s fiercely protective of those she loves – her nine-year-old daughter, Dakota, and her on/off mentor and lover, JT – and this often puts her in positions where she has to make impossible choices – where whatever she decides the consequences of that choice will impact negatively on someone important to her.
In Deep Blue Trouble she has to decide just how far she’s prepared to go to protect the ones she loves – will she leave her daughter in Florida to chase down a fugitive heading for the Mexican border? Will she compromise an informant’s trust to save the man she loves from death row? Will she do the job with no questions asked or choose to expose a web of secrets and lies and put herself in mortal danger? Whatever she decides, she’s got an ocean of trouble on her hands.

Steph Broadribb is an alumni of the MA Creative Writing at City University London and trained as a bounty hunter in California. Her debut thriller DEEP DOWN DEAD was shortlisted for the eDunnit eBook of the year award, and the Dead Good Reader Awards for Fearless Female Character and Award for Most Exceptional Debut. Her second book in the Lori Anderson action thriller series, DEEP BLUE TROUBLE, is out now – here’s the blurb: Single mom Florida bounty hunter Lori Anderson has an ocean of trouble on her hands. Her daughter Dakota is safe, but her cancer is threatening a comeback, and Lori needs JT – Dakota’s dad and the man who taught Lori everything – alive and kicking. Problem is, he’s behind bars and heading for death row. Desperate to save him, Lori takes an off-the-books job from shady FBI agent Alex Monroe – bring back on-the-run felon Gibson ‘The Fish’ Fletcher and JT walks free. This is one job she’s got to get right, or she’ll lose everything…
