It is perhaps no surprise to find that Phil Redmond’s mesmerising novel Highbridge expertly juggles a slew of characters and narrative strands — the writer’s long experience in writing for TV allowed him to hone such skills to a fine degree. His protagonists, brothers Sean and Joey, have different approaches when dealing with the murder of their sister Janey. Sean takes a more respectable route, channelling political methods to try to obtain justice. But the volatile, impatient Joey has no time for such niceties and seeks out direct action in the dark criminal world of the neighbourhood in which Janey died. One way or another, both brothers are dedicated to bringing a killer to justice. This is crime fiction of real energy and ambition, and makes the reader keenly impatient for more such fare from the multitalented Redmond.
