Aficionados of the best in current thriller writing will already have Chris Mooney on their list for such excellent thrillers as Remembering Sarah (which was nominated for the Edgar Award), The Missing and The Secret Friend. His steely narrative skills are the equal of many a practitioner in the field, but (if there is any justice in the world) it is only a matter of time before his acclaim matches that of better-known but less skilled authors. The latest book, The Soul Collectors, may well be the perfect calling card for him; it plunges his investigator, CSI specialist Darby McCormick, into a terrifying (and gruesome) situation and builds on the bravura opening with quiet skill. Be warned: don’t start reading this if you have urgent jobs to do. Those jobs are likely to remain undone…
