Although his sardonically entertaining series of Angel modern crime novels might not lead one to think so, the protean Mike Ripley has turned out to be an apposite heir apparent for the great Margery Allingham, with his new novels featuring the tenacious Albert Campion (such as this book’s predecessor, Mr Campion’s Farewell — a title, thankfully, that proved inaccurate) affording a rich blend of affectionate recreation and vividly memorable writing. Margery Allingham may no longer be with us, but it’s a cause for celebration that the talented Mr Ripley is.

Margery Allingham’s Mr Campion’s Fox by Mike Ripley is published by Severn House
