It’s a real cause for celebration that several of the classic Hammond Innes novels (such as Campbell’s Kingdom and The Wreck of the Mary Deare) are being reprinted with new introductions by Vintage. All the books are a reminder of the splendours of the classic era of adventure fiction, and it’s to be hoped that a new readership will be found for these books which have languished for far too long. Readers of an earlier generation will remember just how iconic such books as The Lonely Skier were, and I’d suggest that they should be required reading both for modern practitioners of the art and for readers to whom Innes is merely a name. All of them are shot through with total storytelling authority.
Campbell’s Kingdom, The Lonely Skier, Wreckers Must Breathe and The Wreck of the Mary Deare are published by Vintage Classics.
