Started by the late, great Robert B. Parker, and finished by his Literary Executor Helen Brann, Silent Night (No Exit Press-P/B-£8.99) finds Spenser, Boston’s premier private eye on the frozen city streets helping out an organisation protecting homeless children. However, all is not as it seems, and Spenser and his buddy Hawk come up against a dangerous drug overlord who can only be defeated by violence.

A perfect stocking filler for fans of hard-boiled crime fiction.

Sadly, also deceased is Jill McGown whose 1988 novel Murder At The Old Vicarage-A Christmas Mystery(Pan-P/B-£8.99), an homage to Agatha Christie is republished this year. A snowbound village, a little light adultery, some marital problems, a loaded shotgun and a sudden violent death all add up to a juicy pot pouri for McGown’s police serial characters Lloyd and Hill to solve.

A perfect stocking filler for fans of golden age crime fiction.
