It is becoming something of a cliché to suggest that John le Carré’s stellar career as a novelist is now as assured as it was in his heyday, but perhaps the point still needs to be made; books such as the new novel, A Delicate Truth, have all the psychological nuance and subtlety of plotting that has been the hallmark of the writer since he produced such earlier masterpieces as The Spy Who Came In From The Cold. And speaking of the latter novel, it’s interesting to observe that A Delicate Truth is relatively brief, as opposed to the imposing volumes which became the norm for le Carré. If you haven’t read the writer for a while, now’s the time to remind yourself of just how nonpareil his work really is.
